Stittsville sweeps competition in Cleaning the Capital

Posted Jan 15, 2010 By Shad Qadri

EMC News - I am pleased to announce that the Stittsville community has won the city's Fall Cleaning the Capital "ward award," which is presented to the ward with the highest participation rate for the fall campaign.

The spring and fall Cleaning the Capital campaigns encourage and support community involvement in the city's seasonal clean-up efforts. This year both campaigns achieved record participation with more than 87,000 residents participating in litter pick-up and graffiti removal projects.

Stittsville parks, pathways, sportsfields and creeks were cleaned by 1,500 volunteers this past fall.

City staff are gearing up for the spring 2010 campaign. Online registration starts March 15 and the campaign runs April 15 to May 15.

Thank you for helping to keep Ottawa clean, green, and litter-free. The bar is now set for our community during the fall clean-up!

WEST END FIRE STATION

A site plan application has been submitted for the new west end fire station at 34 Iber Rd. The site is located on the west side of Iber Road, with Fringewood Park to the west, vacant land to the north and Hazeldean Road to the south.

The proposal will see a new single storey composite fire station constructed with an area of 1165.2 sq. m. and a height of 11.5 m. The vegetation buffer to the rear of the property will remain and additional plantings are proposed along the rear.

Plans can be reviewed at www.ottawa.ca/planning under the development application search. For questions, or to provide comments by Jan. 27, please contact the city planner, Mark Young, at 613-580-2424 ext. 41396 or Mark.Young@ottawa.ca.

BENEFITS OF THE GREEN BIN

The green bin program has officially launched, with one collection period having passed for most residents.

Admittedly, it will take time for this program to gain in popularity, but I stand by its inherent benefits. Our community has been a vocal advocate on the issue of landfilling and its impact on our quality of life and this program will help in the fight against the archaic process of landfilling. The organic material will be composted and a percentage of the final product will be used to fertilize community sportsfields and parks.

The use of incineration and gasification are viable options for the diversion of the city's waste. These technologies, along with the green bin, will work together to reduce waste being directed to landfills. The city is currently involved in a pilot plasmafication project with Plasco.

Organic waste does not produce as much energy in the gasification process as a dry stream, and therefore, associated costs could be passed to the consumer. As such, the organics program compliments and enhances waste-to-energy strategies.

I have requested the city, along with surrounding communities and the National Capital Region, seriously investigate incineration and waste-to-energy technology as a long-term solution to our waste handling. I have long maintained that we must view garbage as a resource, not a liability. We will not radically alter our environmental policies overnight, it will take time, but we must take the appropriate actions.

HAZELDEAN ROAD UPDATE

With the construction of the Hazeldean Road widening now underway, residents will experience traffic delays in the vicinity of the project.

Between Stittsville Main Street and Iber Road, what was once Hazeldean Road has been shifted to the south and the road dimensions have been reduced, as well, reduced speed limits have also been put into place. This is necessary in order to allow for trenching work to commence.

A similar process will take place between Stittsville Main Street and Carp Road in the coming weeks.

It is expected this portion of the construction process will last for several months.
