Bilingualism should not trump common sense
Posted Mar 5, 2010 By Wendell and Diane SparkesDear Editor:
My wife, Diane and I, read with great interest Jeff Maguire's 'Reflections' column in the EMC dated Friday, Feb. 26, regarding the ongoing divisive language debate.
As English speaking townshippers from the Sherbrooke-Lennoxville area and graduates of Bishop's University and McGill University, we are a couple of the 200,000 anglophones who left Quebec, fed up with language discrimination and Quebec's Bill 101 and the language police.
In our opinion, the federal Parliament should never have allowed the Quebec National Assembly to adopt legislation that defines French as the only official language of Quebec. As a member of the Canadian Federation, Quebec should respect and adhere to the Canada's Official Languages Act.
We are not opposed to the use of the French language in the Vancouver 2010 Olympics but surely it should not be predominant.
Let's speak up for fairness in the use of our official languages.
Sincerely,
Wendell and Diane Sparkes
