Second annual Stittsville Appreciation Awards aim to honour deserving residents, businesses
Posted Mar 12, 2010 By Sarah KelfordEMC News - Now is your chance to nominate Stittsville's finest for the second annual Stittsville Appreciation Awards, slated to take place April 20.
With the great success of last year's event, Ward 6 Stittsville-Kanata West councillor Shad Qadri wanted to highlight community youth, seniors, residents and businesses again for their tireless efforts in the community.
"The Stittsville Appreciation Awards are designed to celebrate the accomplishments and generosity of those around us, the businesses and people that make Stittsville a tremendous place to live," said Qadri.
The awards were created last year to revive the tradition of the Goulbourn Recognition Awards, which took place from 1990 and 2002.
"I wanted to revive these awards as I felt it necessary to honour the many individuals who shape our local community," noted Qadri, who received a Goulbourn Recognition Award in 2001 for Business of the Year, along with his wife Theresa for their former store Showbiz Entertainment.
Nominations for the 2010 Stittsville Appreciation Awards must be received by March 31.
The categories are: the Roger Griffiths Memorial Citizen of the Year, awarded to an individual who exemplifies community involvement and participation, Senior of the Year (age 65 and older), awarded to a senior who has made a significant and long-standing contribution to the community, Youth of the Year (19 and younger), awarded to a youth who demonstrated leadership, volunteer services, serves as a peer example and has overcome personal challenges or responds in an emergency situation, and Business of the Year, awarded to a Stittsville business that contributes significantly to the community's quality of life. Please include a detailed, written submission outlining why the person or business is being nominated.
