The Stittsville Rams Atom B hockey team came home victorious after the North York Knights Hockey Tournament.
EMC Sports - The Stittsville Rams Atom B hockey team reigned victorious in winning the North York Knights Hockey Tournament held the weekend of Jan. 29 to 31.

What made this championship win particularly noteworthy was the way in which the 10 year olds won the seven-team competition.

Their total team effort and defensive play allowed them to capture the title with only one goal against in the four games they played.

Though the Atoms won their first two games by scores of 6-0 and 4-0 against the host North York Knights and West Mall Lightning respectively, the scores did not reflect the competitiveness of the games.

Not only did the boys' solid efforts win them these games, but it allowed them to come out on the right side of a bet with assistant coach, Paul Bush, and trainer Ray Girouard, where both men were forced to compete in a dance competition later that evening in the team gathering room at their hotel.

Always the good sports, both coaches honoured their debts to the delight of the boys and families.

Finishing on top of the round robin qualifier earned the Rams a bye into the semi-finals where they encountered an even more determined and hard working West Mall Lightning.

Timely saves by the goalies, the strong play of the defence and the team play and speed of the forwards allowed our local boys to win the hard fought game by a very close 2-1 margin.

Saving their best game of the tournament, and one of their best of the season for their final game, the young Rams won the championship game against a very strong team from Credit River (second place in their own Mississauga competitive A league) outplaying the challengers 4-0.

The boys were able to effectively combine their personal skills with a solid team- first strategy to outplay a team that some local observers felt would be the easy victors.

The fact that the boys were perfect gentlemen throughout the weekend made the coaches and parents all the happier for the team's success.

The Atom Rams have made it to the semi-finals of the 50 team Bell Capital Cup and the finals of the 16 team South Grenville tournaments this year as well.

They currently sit near the top of their league with an 18 - 1 - 6 record.
