Rotary Club wants a youth to attend leadership camp
Posted Feb 2, 2012 By EMC NewsEMC News - The Rotary Club of Ottawa - Stittsville is looking for a youth who wants to develop his or her leadership skills.
This would be done by attending a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program in Kingston this spring.
The Rotary Club of Ottawa - Stittsville will pay the $925 enrolment fee which covers seven meals and accommodation at the Donald Gordon Conference Centre in Kingston from May 31 through June 3. In addition, the Rotary Club usually arranges for transportation to and from the leadership camp.
Youth at this leadership camp discuss leadership skills and develop them through practice. Those participating must be between 17 and 23 years of age. There is a limit of 20 participants, with the deadline for registration being Feb. 28.
Youth participating in a RYLA program must have previously exhibited leadership qualities. Participants are expected to be able to communicate effectively and to work well with other youth.
Any youth in the Stittsville area who are interested in pursuing this leadership development opportunity should contact Rotary Club of Ottawa - Stittsville president Theresa Qadri at Theresaq@rogers.com or the Club's youth chair Jas Michalski at jas.michalski@rogers.com.
The RYLA program emphasizes leadership, citizenship and personal growth. RYLA programs are meant to demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth, to provide an effective training experience for youth and potential leaders, to encourage leadership of youth by youth, and to recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.
A RYLA program covers fundamentals of leadership, ethics of positive leadership, importance of communication skills in effective leadership, problem solving and conflict management, building self confidence and self-esteem and elements of community and global citizenship. A RYLA program consists mainly of presentations, activities and workshops, supplemented by group work which can enhance the presentations and can facilitate team building.
The RYLA program started in Australia in 1959 and in 1971 it became a Rotary International program
