Trucks to be cleaner, quieter
Posted Feb 2, 2012 By EMC NewsEMC News - Waste Management is going cleaner and quieter with its trucks.
The company will be constructing a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fuelling station at its Westbrook Road facility in Stittsville where its trucks that collect waste and recycling materials, both residential and commercial, will be able to be re-fuelled. Waste Management currently operates 17 of these CNG fuelling stations across North America, with plans to have nearly 50 in operation by the end of this year.
CNG powered trucks contribute to a smaller carbon footprint with up to 25 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, the trucks run quieter than traditional diesel engines, creating less noise pollution.
For each truck converted to CNG, the use of diesel fuel is reduced by an average of 8,000 gallons per year.
The 25 trucks that Waste Management is purchasing to handle its new residential collection contract with the city of Ottawa will be CNG fuelled. In addition, existing commercial diesel collection vehicles will be converted to natural gas usage through the company's normal fleet replacement schedule.
