Royals in overtime
Posted Feb 16, 2012 By John CurryEMC Sports - The Stittsville Royals chalked up a 3-2 overtime win over the Almonte Thunder in Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League action at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville last Sunday afternoon, Feb. 12.
A goal by Matt Kadolph at the 4:35 mark in overtime gave the Royals the victory. Scott Barnes and Neill Penner earned assists on this game winning marker.
The two teams were deadlocked at 2-2 following regulation time. The Royals had led 1-0 after the first period thanks to a goal by Travis Brown. The Royals scored another goal in the second period, with Matt Kadolph picking up his first goal of the game. Kyle Drisdelle earned an assist on the goal.
The teams were tied 2-2 going into the third period which saw no scoring, setting up the overtime play. Karsten Pankhurst stopped 37 of 39 shots in the Royals' net in this game.
This victory by the Royals came on the heels of two straight losses to the Division leading Arnprior Packers.
Last Friday night, Feb. 10 in Arnprior, the Royals dropped a 4-2 decision to the hometown Packers. The game was tied 1-1 after the first period with the Packers leading 2-1 going into the third period. Matt Kadolph and Justin Mayo scored the goals for the Royals in this game. Assists were earned by Scott Barnes, Matt Kadolph and Brandon Lee. Karsten Pankhurst in the Royals' net stopped 42 of 46 shots directed his way in this game.
This 4-2 loss followed a similar 4-2 loss by the Royals to the Packers in a game at the Goulbourn Recreation Complex in Stittsville on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 5.
In this game, the visiting Packers led 2-1 after the first period and extended their lead to 3-1 going into the third period.
Alex Hulford and Ty Fleming scored for the Royals in this game. Assists went to Neill Penner, Ryan Dube and Justin Mayo. Eric Miksik in the Royals net made 38 saves in this game.
The Stittsville Royals are currently in fifth place in the Valley Division of the Eastern Ontario Junior Hockey League. After 39 games, the Royals have 13 wins, 23 losses and 3 ties, good for 29 points. The Arnprior Packers are leading the Division, with Perth Blue Wings in second place.
Matt Kadolph is the leading scorers for the Royals so far this season, with 45 points based on 19 goals and 26 assists. Justin Mayo is next in Royals' scoring with 18 goals and 22 assists for 40 points.
The Stittsville Royals are playing the Renfrew Timberwolves this Friday, Feb. 17 at 8:30 p.m. at the Johnny Leroux Stittsville Community Arena in Stittsville.
