EMC News - A giant bonfire not only sent sparks soaring into the dark night sky but also spread its glow of warmth to the two dozen or so who migrated to its appealing roar at the opening ceremony for this year's 39th annual Munster winter carnival last Friday evening, Feb. 10 at the Munster Community Centre site.

Munster Community Association vice-president Kurt Johnson stood in the glare of the roaring fire as he officially opened the winter carnival, urging everyone to have lots of fun during the event.

City of Ottawa Rideau/Goulbourn ward councillor Scott Moffatt had been scheduled to attend this opening ceremony but he was battling an illness and could not attend.

Mr. Johnson also announced the winner in the Munster winter carnival poster contest which had been judged on the Thursday afternoon. Iain Slingerland, principal of Munster Elementary School, and John Curry, editor of the Stittsville News, were the judges of the posters which highlighted this year's carnival theme, "Winter - A Dolphin's Tale."

Poster winners in the pre-kindergarten/junior kindergarten category were Jaime Thomas, first, Maggie Neff, second, and Noah Easy, third.

Winners in the primary category (senior kindergarten to grade two) were Jacob Deevy, first, Sarafina, second, and Finlay Maroney, third.

Winners in the junior category (grades three to five) were Emily Toswell, first, Brianna Hamilton, second, and Sara Oracheski, third.

The skating rink at the Munster Community Centre was lit up as over 25 skaters enjoyed the ice and skating to the music broadcast on site by radio station Jack FM.

Inside the Community Centre, youngsters enjoyed a craft time followed by the showing of "Winter - A Dolphin's Tale," the movie which inspired the theme for this year's winter carnival.
