The dance raised $4,423.32 with some pledges still coming in, meaning that the final total may come close to the pre-dance goal of $5,000. This is the amount that was raised by the Dance 4 Diabetes at Goulbourn Middle School last year.
The $4,432.32 has increased the amount of money raised for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by eight Dances 4 Diabetes since they were started by student Hannah Hempinstall at Richmond Public School in Richmond in 2008.
Hannah moved on to Goulbourn Middle School and took her Dance 4 Diabetes initiative with her. Dance 4 Diabetes dances are now held annually at both Richmond Public School and Goulbourn Middle School.
Hannah has also organized Dance 4 Diabetes events at the Canadian School of Dance in Barrhaven where she takes dances lessons. Indeed, the next Dance 4 Diabetes that she is organizing will take place at the Canadian School of Dance on Saturday, June 9. She hopes to hit the $30,000 fundraising mark with this event.
PM Events Services donated DJ services for last Friday's dance at Goulbourn Middle School.
The dance also featured a number of door prizes which were donated such as an Ottawa Senators gift pack and Ottawa 67s tickets. Three skateboards were raffle off as well.
This Dance 4 Diabetes initiative raising funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help find a cure for diabetes was begun by Hannah Hempinstall after she learned that her best friend Emma Streatch was diagnosed with diabetes. Since that time, Hannah has also learned that her mother is also suffering from diabetes.
The desire to do something to help fight diabetes in the name of her best friend and her mother has driven Hannah to create the Dance 4 Diabetes initiative and to date raise thousands for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
